Fond du Lac High School will have a new football coach. Athletic Director Dave Michalkiewicz announced this morning that Mike Gnewuch will be resigning his position as head coach at the end of the school year.Gnewuch will be the next head coach at Mukwonago High School, a move that was given approval by their school board Monday night and made official Tuesday morning. Michalkiewicz said “Coach Gnewuch did an excellent job as our head football coach developing not only a great program, but developing great student athletes as well. We greatly appreciate Coach Gnewuch’s service and dedication to Fond du Lac High School and the Athletic Department over the past six years, and wish him well in his new position”.

Gnewuch is originally from Waukesha County and coached at Arrowhead High School before coming to Fond du Lac. Gnewuch talked about the decision to take the job at Mukwonago with KFIZ Sports. He said “I competed against Mukwonago for many years as a coach at Arrowhead. They have great tradition. I became interested in the opportunity and as things became more and more realistic, I decided it was time to move on from Fond du Lac.”

Gnewuch added “Fond du Lac has been a great place to work the past six years. I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that I was given by Dr. Jim Sebert and John Wiltzius, Principal at the time in 2012 and I’ll forever be indebted.”

As for Fond du Lac Football program going forward, Gnewuch says the state of the program is strong. “The team returns 16 starters, nine on defense and seven guys that started games on the offensive side of the ball.” Gnewuch said. “As far as experience coming back, there’s a wealth of it. There is a wealth of talent as well. It will be the best numbers we’ve had as a senior class. The leadership should be there, the working out and the lifting aspect of it, everything is established and that’s in really good hands”.

The school will begin the process to determine a new head coach immediately.
