Illinois Tollway Will No Longer Accept Cash

If you travel in and out of Illinois, you are familiar with passing through the maze that is the Illinois Tollway. You may not be a fan of the tollway, but the days of approaching a toll booth, frantically searching for the correct change are coming to an end.

The Illinois tollway has announced it will permanently eliminate cash toll collections and in its place will be I-Pass, E-ZPass or online payments.

If you are unable to pay online, you will also be given an option to pay by check or money order. The tollway suspended cash back in March of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The tollway also plans to rollout a program in May that is designed to assist low-income drivers by waiving deposits on I-PASS transponders, and also adding $20 in tolls to people who exceed the low household income poverty line by 2 1/2 times.
