Investigators Trying To Determine Cause Of Convent Fire

Investigators today will try and
determine the cause for the fire at the former Holy Nativity convent at 101 East
Division Street in Fond du Lac. Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue was on the scene at
the historic building most of Friday night to tackle hotspots after the fire was extinguished. Division Chief of
Fire Prevention Troy Haase says when firefighters arrived they encountered heavy
black smoke coming from the roof with heavy fire on the rear side of the
building. No injuries were reported. The Red Cross was at the scene providing
assistance to firefighters and police officers. Chief Peter O’Leary says more
than 100 firefighters battled the blaze from about 20 area fire departments. The
convent was built in 1874 and had about 40 bedrooms. Photo above from Steve “Axle” Hinkley.
