Johnny Davis Voted Best Shooting Guard
MADISON, Wis. – The trophy case continues to grow for Johnny Davis, as the Wisconsin sophomore standout added another award to his collection when he was named the 2022 Jerry West Award winner by the Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Given to the nation’s best shooting guard, Davis becomes the first Badger to win the award in school history.
“I am honored to win the Jerry West Award and to be named the best shooting guard in college basketball this season,” Davis said. “I want to thank Jerry West and the Basketball Hall of Fame for recognizing my talents and honoring me with this award. I would like to thank my teammates and coaches for being able to help me be the player that I am and win this award. None of this is possible without the unforgettable season that we had this year.”
Wisconsin has seen two other players win positional awards from the Basketball Hall of Fame, as both Ethan Happ (2019) and Frank Kaminsky (2015) won the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as the nation’s best center.
Davis, a consensus All-American, the Big Ten player of the year, and winner of the 2022 Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award, averaged 19.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while leading the Badgers to a share of the Big Ten regular season title.
Earlier this week, Davis announced that he is declaring for the 2022 NBA Draft.
A projected lottery pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, Davis looks to become the first Badger drafted since Frank Kaminsky (9th overall) and Sam Dekker (18th overall) were selected in the 2015 NBA Draft.
