>>Paul Chryst “Hopeful” Mertz Can Start At QB

(Madison, WI)  —  Badgers head football coach Paul Chryst says he is “hopeful” redshirt freshman Graham Mertz will be able to start Saturday’s game at Michigan.  Mertz has been sidelined for three weeks after testing positive for COVID-19.  He didn’t miss any action because Wisconsin was forced to cancel games against Nebraska and Purdue.  Mertz had one of the best first starts of any U-W quarterback when he connected on 20-of-21 passes for 248 yards and five touchdowns in the season opener against Illinois.  It has been 10 years since the Badgers won a game at the “Big House” in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

>>Wisconsin Men’s Hockey Team Loaded With Talent; Could Use Some Wins

(South Bend, IN)  —  The Wisconsin men’s hockey team gets its season underway at Notre Dame tonight (Friday).  The two teams split four games last season.  The Badgers have 10 NHL draft picks on their roster and return the Big Ten Conference goals leader in Cole Caufield.  He had a hat trick in one of the games of the last series between the two teams last January.  The Badgers will be trying to emerge from three straight seasons of sub-.500 records – including last year’s mark of 14-20-2.  Notre Dame is ranked number-20 in the preseason poll.  The puck drops at 6:00 p-m on the Fighting Irish home ice.

>>No Trades So Packers Must Get Better By Getting Healthier

(Green Bay, WI)  —  The Packers front office made no trades at the deadline, but there’s a good chance the team can get better by getting healthier.  Aaron Jones and Davante Adams played together for the first time in a long time in Sunday’s win over the 49ers.  When Green Bay hosts Jacksonville for Sunday’s game left tackle David Bakhtiari should be in the lineup.  Although the price tag in a potential trade for Houston Texans speedy receiver Will Fuller proved to be too high, the return of Allen Lazard could have a similar impact.  The 6-and-2 Packers are starting the second half of the season this weekend in a good position for the playoffs.

>>Brewers SP Burnes Gets Some Notice In Cy Young Voting

(Milwaukee, WI)  —  Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes is getting some notice from national baseball writers.  Burnes finished sixth in the voting for the National League Cy Young Award.  Cincinnati’s Trevor Bauer took 27 of the 30 first-place votes to finish first.  Yu Darvish of the Cubs and Jacob deGrom of the Mets were far behind.  Burnes pitched to a two-point-11 earned run average this season, striking out more than 13 batters-per-nine-innings.  Reliever Devin Williams also picked up some votes, finishing eighth after a season which saw him named National League Rookie of the Year and Reliever of the Year.

>>Badgers Basketball In Top-10 (No. 7) For First Time In 5 Years

(Undated). —  Coaches and writers both have ranked the Wisconsin Badgers number-seven in the first college basketball poll of the season.  Coach Greg Gard’s crew is placed among the top-10 in a preseason poll for the first time in five years.  Only Iowa at number-six was ranked higher.  The Big Ten Conference had six teams in the USA Today poll, including three in the top-10.  Illinois was ranked 10th.  Michigan State was 12th, Rutgers 23rd and Ohio State 24th.
