High School Football:

Several high school football players from the area were named Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Stars Monday. They include Garrett Sphatt from Fond du Lac High School, Clay Schueffner and McKinley Buetow from St. Mary’s Springs Academy and Grant Manke from Winnebago Lutheran Academy. Seven Oakfield Oaks were also named WFCA all-stars in the eight man division, they are Alex Chiavetta, Eric Jacob, James Kottke, Brady Laabs, Eli Liebelt, Ethan Tapp & Brandon Williams. The WFCA All-Star games will be played July 21st at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.

College Basketball:

Virginia has ascended to No. 1 in the latest Associated Press men’s basketball poll despite Saturday’s one-point loss against visiting Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers received 30 of 65 first-place votes to reach the top of the poll for the first time since December 1982. Second-ranked Michigan State received 21 first-place votes and is followed in the poll by former No. 1 Villanova, Xavier and Cincinnati. Two other Big Ten teams are in the top 10, with Purdue at number six and Ohio State at number eight. Michigan is the only other Big Ten team ranked. The Wolverines find themselves at number 22 in this week’s poll.
