Sports Headlines:

Hours before it was to play in the Big Ten Conference tournament, the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team was told the season is over, no N-C-A-A, no chance at a national title.  Sports, in general, are on hold as pro, college and high school leaders try to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Major League Baseball, the N-H-L, N-B-A and pro soccer have all suspended play.  In one conference tournament, the play was suspended in the middle of a game.

The Milwaukee Brewers were scheduled to open the 2020 Major League Baseball season at home against the Chicago Cubs.  Now, that date is being postponed and it isn’t known when – or if – the game will be played. M-L-B leaders say they are working on a variety of contingency plans and there is a vague promise of an announcement, but no timetable for when it might be offered.  The Brewers say they will have more information to share next week. The team is having an optional player workout today (Friday) in Maryvale and another Monday – but, both are closed to the public.

The Milwaukee Bucks are telling their fans to hold on to their tickets – even though Thursday’s home game against the Boston Celtics was canceled when the N-B-A suspended play indefinitely. The Bucks had 10 home games remaining in the rest of the season and the team says any tickets held for any postponed game will be valid for the rescheduled date.  If play doesn’t resume, those ticket holders will receive notification about their options.

The Green Bay Packers have announced some changes to head coach Matt LaFleur’s staff for the 2020 N-F-L season.  Butch Barry will serve as a senior analyst in his 18th season of coaching in college or the N-F-L. The Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin native was an assistant offensive line coach with Tampa Bay in the past.  Luke Getsy returned to the Packers last season and he has been promoted to quarterbacks-passing game coordinator. In his second season as an assistant with the Packers, Jason Vrable will become the team’s wide receivers coach.  All of those assignments were announced Thursday.

Senior guard Markus Howard of Marquette has been named a Sporting News First Team All-American. Howard is the first Marquette player to be selected for the first team since Dwyane Wade 17 years ago.  Three Marquette players in history have been honored that way. Howard made the second team last year. He was a unanimous All-Big East First Team selection for a second straight season this year. He also was the nation’s leading scorer at 27-point-eight points-a-game and is on the watch list for at least a half-dozen post-season awards.
