Northwoods League Baseball:

The boys of summer are back – as its Opening Day for the Northwoods League and their 2018 champion, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders. Fond du Lac opens the regular season with four games in Michigan – two against Kalamazoo and two against Battle Creek before their home opener Saturday night against Lakeshore. The Spiders and Growlers will meet up tonight at 6:05 central time – listen on KFIZ.com (look for the listen live link on the right hand side of the page).

New this year in the Northwoods League – two new teams, new division names and and a split from two divisions into four. The new teams joining the Northwoods League this year include the Kokomo Jackrabbits from Indiana and the Traverse City Pit Spitters from Michigan. Instead of North and South divisions, the league is split into “Great Lakes” and “Great Plains” divisions with “east” and “west” subdivisions. Fond du Lac is in the “Great Lakes – East” Division along with the Wisconsin Woodchucks, Madison Mallards, Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, Lakeshore Chinooks and the newly named Green Bay Booyah.

–Orlando Arcia clubbed the go-ahead two run home run in the eighth inning as the Brewers rallied to defeat the Twins in game one of the series Monday night in Minneapolis. Minnesota scored four runs in the second inning, with Milwaukee plating three in the third. The game would remain scoreless until Arcia’s homer in the eighth. The second and final game of the series is tonight, first pitch at 7:10, coverage starts after High School Baseball on KFIZ.

Brewers catcher Manny Pina will begin a rehab assignment with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers tonight. Pina has been rehabbing a right hamstring strain that he suffered on the 15th in a game against Philadelphia. It’s not the first time Pina has rehabbed in Appleton, going 1 for 3 with a walk in a game against Dayton last July. Pina’s rehab assignment is for four days – and will feature three games against Clinton and one against Peoria.
