–Sam Hubbe allowed just one run on five hits in eight innings, while striking out seven as the Dock Spiders beat the Growlers Thursday night in Kalamazoo. Zack Bryant added his eighth save of the season by retiring the side in the ninth inning. On offense, Troy Black drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning – he now has 18 RBI on the season for Fondy. The two teams meet again tonight – first pitch at 6:05 pm.

–Jordy Mercer went 3 for 4 at the plate with four RBI and Jameson Taillon struck out 10 Brewers batters as the Pirates took game one of the weekend series with Milwaukee at PNC Park Thursday night. Jesus Aguilar hit his 24th home run of the season for the Brewers in the fourth inning, the lone bright spot for Milwaukee, aside from a ninth inning rally that fell short. The two teams meet again tonight, coverage starts at 5:30 on KFIZ, first pitch at 6:05.

American League:

MLB News:

The Brewers now have a franchise record five players going to the All-Star Game after reliever Jeremy Jeffress was named to the National League squad Thursday. Jeffress replaces Washington closer Sean Doolittle, who is on the disabled list. He sports a point-99 E-R-A in 44 appearances going into the Brewers’ final series of the year.

NBA Summer League:

Milwaukee 83, San Antonio 75

–Christian Wood scored 28 points to lead the Bucks in the win. Milwaukee will play Philadelphia Saturday in the next round of the Summer League tournament.

College Football:

Three WIAC teams find themselves in the D3 Football.com Preseason Top 25 that came out Thursday. UW-Oshkosh, who finished 12-1 last year with an appearance in the National Semifinals, is the highest of the bunch at #4 overall. UW-Whitewater is ranked #12, while UW-Platteville is #16 in the preseason rankings. UW-La Crosse finds themselves in the “others receiving votes” section of the poll – the Eagles picked up 27 votes. Defending National Champion Mount Union is ranked #1, while last year’s runner up, Mary Hardin-Baylor is ranked #2 to begin the year.
