Marian Softball Earns a Couple on All-NACC Team

MILWAUKEE – A pair of student-athletes from Marian University softball have earned All-NACC recognition for the first time in their respective careers.

Sophomore Katelyn Matenaer (West Bend, Wis.) did it all for the Sabres at the top of the batting lineup to earn All-NACC First Team recognition.  Matenaer ranked in the top-11 of the NACC for all hitting averages ranking sixth in the conference with a .441 batting average to go with a .483 on-base percentage and .658 slugging percentage.  Her 49 total hits on the season also put her eighth in the conference.  Matenaer had 16 games with multiple hits and ended the season with five straight multi-hit efforts.  She posted a pair of four-hit performances with one coming in a 14-6 win over Lakeland where she was 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two runs driven in.  In a doubleheader with then-ranked No. 16 MSOE, Matenaer went 6-for-7 (.857) at the plate with a pair of runs scored.  On the defensive side of things, Matenaer was more than reliable at shortstop all season long boasting a 93.5-percent fielding percentage.  She was also a part of five of the 10 double plays Marian turned during the season.

Senior Melanie Weigel (West Salem, Wis.) closes out her Sabre career by being named to the honorable mention team of the NACC.  Weigel hit .337 on the season with a .429 slugging percentage and led the team with 19 runs driven in.  She was held hitless in just nine of 33 games and had seven multi-hit games.  During the Lakeland doubleheader, Weigel hit 5-for-9 (.555) with a run scored and two runs driven in. Weigel also drove in three runs in the first game of a doubleheader against Benedictine where she went 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Over her career, Weigel recorded 87 hits over the course of 100 games for a .340 batting average.  Her slugging percentage closes at .496 stemming from 13 doubles and nine home runs.  Of her 58 runs driven in over the past four years, 47 of them came over the past two seasons.
