Marian U And Flight For Life Partner For Program

On Monday, March 18, Marian University and Flight For Life partnered to offer a new educational opportunity for area EMS agencies and hospital staff. The four-hour session, titled “Thorax, Abdomen and CNS: Anatomical Review and Case Study Analysis,” offers participants the opportunity to view the human anatomy up close and participate in small group discussions to enhance their skills and understanding of the assessment and treatment of medical emergencies.

Marian University’s Cadaver Dissection students begin by leading a hands-on demonstration of the anatomy of the chest and abdominal cavities, and the central nervous system. Flight For Life personnel then lead case study discussions of related medical emergencies, including traumatic injuries.

“Partnering with Marian University has allowed us to offer local EMS agencies, as well as hospital staff, a unique experience,” says Flight For Life – Fond du Lac Base Manager Nettie Jenkins. “Working in a lab setting, with the type of hands-on demonstrations we’re offering, is not something that is typically included in the education of an EMT or nurse.”

“Marian University is fortunate to be able to join with Flight for Life to offer this unique opportunity for our local and regional EMT’s, paramedics and flight nurses.  It is rare that these individuals are able to experience the combined hands-on human anatomy along with the clinical case studies so relevant to their success as practitioners. I am also very proud that our Marian Biology majors who comprise the human cadaver dissection team are able to contribute so significantly to the continuing education of these paramedical professionals,” says Dr. Sheryl Ayala, professor of biology and director of the Human Cadaver Dissection Program at Marian University.

The March 18 session was the second class offered this year by Marian University and Flight For Life. Two more classes have been announced: Saturday, April 27, from 8:00am until noon, and Wednesday, May 8, from 6:00pm until 10:00pm. Both classes still have openings and can be taken for eight continuing education units. Anyone interested in participating should contact Nettie Jenkins at 920-979-7676.
