Mother In Infant Death Case Bound Over For Trial

While a nationwide hunt continues for the Bellwood, Illinois man believed to be responsible for the death of a 14-month-old baby boy, the case of the boy’s mother continues in Fond du Lac County Court. Twenty-four-year-old Airrealle Smart waived her preliminary hearing Thursday and pled not guilty to the four felony charges she faces when she was subsequently arraigned.  Meanwhile the hunt for her boyfriend, 29-year-old Daniel Griffin, continues. He’s wanted for the child’s death and severely injuring the toddler’s twin brother. According to the criminal complaint Smart told investigators that she saw Griffin stand on the victim’s chest, at one point taking one foot off the floor. An autopsy found the baby boy suffered chest, abdomen, and liver and rib injuries. The other child had similar injuries and is still at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Smart was visiting a friend at the Maplewood Commons Apartments when the incident occurred on July 7th. She’s being held in the County Jail on a $150,000 cash bond.
