Move Over Law

A Division Chief with Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue urges drivers to pay attention when they are nearing the scene of a traffic accident or emergency on our highways. The state has a move over law, but Troy Haase says there’s no guarantee that motorists are going to move over at the scene of an accident. He points out police officers usually have only the protection of their vehicle while fire departments have heavier vehicles they can position in ways to shield themselves. Haase feels the flashing lights at those scenes should be adequately seen from a distance so people will move over, but tragically it isn’t always the case. He says a volunteer firefighter from Endeavor was killed in the Packwaukee-Oxford area in December of 2015. Haase emphasizes that there is always a danger of a secondary accident occurring because of the first accident.
