Narcan Use Up In FDL In 2014

The number of times Fond du Lac paramedics used Narcan in 2014 was up from the previous year. Fire Chief Peter O’Leary (pictured) says they used it 88 times last year compared to 79 times in 2013. (He says since 2006 that is the highest number they have had. He says the number of overdoses was up 30 percent and they dealt with 48 overdoses. Sadly there were three overdose deaths and two of them were attributed to heroin. Twenty-six patients improved after Narcan was administered compared to 13 in 2013. Chief O’Leary says law enforcement is making strides in the heroin battle. He says the fire department wanted to let the public know they have had some success in saving people who have overdosed on drugs. The fire department will hold a press conference late Friday morning to highlight those statistics and others compiled in 2014.
