New CWD Rule Requires Deer Farms to Add Fencing

The state DNR board is unanimously approving an emergency rule requiring deer farms to upgrade fences in an effort to slow the spread of chronic wasting disease. Deer farms that have had a CWD infection must install a second fence or solid barrier within the next year. Thirteen farms around the state have seen an infection on their property. The DNR estimates those farmers will have to spend over $876,000 to fully comply. The rule also places a ban on movement of deer carcasses from CWD-affected counties.
