North Fondy Railroad Crossing To Close

After much public commentary both pro and con, the north fond du lac village board voted unanimously Friday to close the railroad crossing at lakeshore drive. Starting this week, the Federal Railroad Administration had lifted the quiet zone in that neighborhood and ordered train horns to be sounded at the crossing.  This order came as a result of two accidents at the crossing in 2007 which the village claims were unrelated to driver safety issues.  As a result of the FRA order, train horns sound up to 160 times a day at the crossing.  The FRA wouldn’t comment other than to say the horns will continue to sound unless the crossing is closed.  Because notices must be posted and the railroad commission must have time to conduct a public hearing, it could take up to 90 days to close the Lakeshore Drive crossing.
