Alice Marie Schmitz

Alice Marie Schmitz, a resident of Fond du Lac, passed away November 12, 2013 at the Harbor Haven Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born October 19, 1923 in St. Cloud, a daughter of the late Michael and Alvina Walber Langenfeld.

On April 30, 1946 she married Harold A. Schmitz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Fond du Lac.

Alice was a graduate of L.P. Goodrich High School. Following her schooling, Alice was employed by the O’Brien’s Dry Goods Store. Following her marriage, Alice concentrated on being a proud homemaker and raising her family. Later, she started to become involved in various volunteer works including, serving as the chairperson of the Natural Beauty Council, receiving an honor for 31 years of dedicated service. Alice also volunteered with the Knights of Columbus Council #664 Auxiliary, the St. Francis Home Auxiliary, the American Legion Post #75 Auxiliary, and Holy Family Parish. Alice was active in the transition from the administrative form of county government to an elected form. Following a successful referendum, she was involved in the election of the first County Executive. One of her contributions to the township, was co-authoring a book on the history of the Town of Fond du Lac, “The Way We Were 1800’s – The Way We Are”.

Survivors include her loving husband, Harold, two sons, Harold M. Schmitz, his former wife, Gretchen, and their daughter, Sloan Schmitz, James A. (Diane) Schmitz and their children, Jason and Natalie Schmitz, all of Fond du Lac, five sisters-in-law, Jane (Al) Ditter of Madison, Ethel (Ray) Ditter, and Georgene Smet all of Fond du Lac, Patricia (Clem) Mertens of Green Bay, and Amanda Schmitz of Fond du Lac, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her uncle, Rev. Henry Langenfeld, four brothers-in-law, Orville, Norman, Claude, and Ernie, and two sisters-in-law, Edna Michels and Mary Agnes Emery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2013, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Zacherl Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held on Friday at Sacred Heart Church, Holy Family Parish, 200 South Peters Avenue, Fond du Lac, from 9:30 to 10:45 AM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 15, 2013, 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church. Entombment will be in the Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery.

A memorial in her name will be established.
