Arlin “Smokey” W. Leonhardt

Arlin “Smokey” W. Leonhardt, 88, of Fond du Lac, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Grancare Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

 

He was born on April 24, 1924, in Fond du Lac, a son of Christian and Elsie Ballwanz Leonhardt.

 

Smokey served with the United States Army Air Corps from 1943-1946, in the Pacific Theatre.

 

He worked for Kiekhaefer Marine from 1946-1961.  He went on to work as a correctional officer at Waupun Correctional Institution from 1961-1976, and he retired in 1985 from Taycheedah Correctional Institution.

 

On September 7, 1964, he married Thelma C. Crook Zickert.  She preceded him in death on October 12, 1978.  On April 23, 1983, he married Agnes Lange Salzwedel.

 

Smokey was a member of Luther Memorial Church, and a past member of the Fond du Lac Noon Optimist Club.  He enjoyed softball as well as bowling, where he made the all-city team.

 

He is survived by his wife, Agnes; three stepdaughters:  Janet (Craig) Walden of Washington, Susan (Myles) Moutoux of Washington, and Barbara Dominick of Illinois; a brother, Luke Leonhardt of Fond du Lac; a nephew, Kurt Leonhardt of Brown Deer; and a niece, Karen (Mike) Fisher of Lacrosse.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carrie Leonhardt; and a brother, Marvin (Fran) Leonhardt.

 

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Mach Funeral Chapel, 31 E. Division Street, Fond du Lac, with Rev. Neal Radichel officiating.  Burial will be in Estabrooks Cemetery.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
