On November 20, 1941, Bernice
married her lifetime companion, Harold W. Wittig of Hartford, WI at Roundy
Memorial Baptist Church, Whitefish Bay.  The
Wittigs moved to Fond du Lac in 1954 and spent the rest of their lives
there.  They were married 62 years when
Harold passed away in 2004.  During their
years together, they shared their hospitality with friends and family, becoming
known for their homemade bratwurst.
Bernice was also famous for her perfect delicate pie crusts.  She and Harold enjoyed visiting all 50 states
including a special fall trip to New England where they ate lobster every
day.  They also traveled to Europe and
enjoyed the Passion Play at Obermmergau, Germany.

Bernice had many friends with
one special friend, Sue Mowbray, who became her “adopted daughter” and part of
Sue’s large family.  Bernice was with
them for holidays and special events, where she could always be found in the
kitchen, washing dishes.  She especially
enjoyed the Caribbean Cruises they took together.

Bernice was a very active
member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac.
She sand in the choir for over 30 years, served as officers in the
Ladies Guild, served on various committees at Hope including the Building
Committee and was involved with the beginning of the Hope Pre-School, and
headed up the Funeral Committee for many years.
She served on the board which began Hospice Hope and spent over 30 years
as a volunteer; delivered Mobil Meals, worked at Loaves and Fishes and served
on the Fond du Lac School Board.  She was
a past-president for the League of Women Voters, was on the Board of Directors
for the Visiting Nurses Association of Fond du Lac and was a former Fond du Lac
Housing Authority member.

In addition to all her
volunteer work, Bernice was a sales rep for Scholastic Inc., for over 20 years
allowing her to travel around Wisconsin visiting elementary schools.  Hobbies included playing piano, reading,
playing cards and sewing.

She is survived by two
daughters:  Katherine (Harold M.) Rehbein
of Jacksonville, Florida and Patricia (Stuart J.) Gerrich of Tempe, Arizona;
two grandchildren:  Steve Rehbein of
Jacksonville, FL and Bryce (Katie) Gerrich of Tempe, AZ; one
great-granddaughter, Ella Gerrich; her brother, Gordon (Virginia) Wepfer of

She was preceded in death by her
husband, Harold;   her brother, Russ (Sally) Wepfer, a sister who
died in infancy and a brother-in-law, Edward A. Wittig.

Family and friends learned
much from Bernice about living her faith, serving as the hands of God on Earth
and the rewards of helping others.  She
