Carl Walter “Wally” Bartelt

Carl Walter “Wally” Bartelt, 92, died Thursday, January 3, 2013 in the house he was born in. Wally was born in the Town of Ashford to Carl and Rosalinda Rusch Bartelt on October 6, 1920. On October 1, 1949, Wally married Vivian Darmody in St. John’s Lutheran Church, West Bend. Wally and Vivian took over the family farm at that time. Wally also worked as a milk hauler for many years enjoying conversations with the farmers. He drove school bus for 30 years. He retired from Precision Metals in 1986. Wally was baptized in 1921 and confirmed in 1934 in the Elmore Reformed Church later part of the Campbellsport United Church of Christ. He was a past member and president of the Church Council, usher, and janitor of the church. Wally graduated from the Elmore one room school in 1935 and Campbellsport High School in 1939. He loved school and tried to attend all his class reunions. Wally loved the farm which was declared a Wisconsin Century Farm in 1991. He was born, raised and lived his entire life on the farm. He and Vivian raised their family there, he rode the lawnmower many miles over the farm in retirement and was happy to be at the farm at the time of his death. Wally enjoyed playing sheepshead with his family and senior center friends. He loved to travel up north and on other US trips. He was a baseball fan and had fun attending and watching Brewers baseball games. Wally lived many years with chronic non-smoker cardio-pulmonary disease. Wally is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vivian and his children Rev. Deborah Bartelt, Appleton; Randall Bartelt (special friend Bonnie Resop) Campbellsport; Roxane (Steve) Platteter, West Bend; Amy (Bert) Wilson, Gladstone, MI; and Penny (Tom) Essmann, Lomira. He is survived by four grandchildren, Richelle Bartelt (fiancé, Justin Volm), Benjamin Bartelt, Heather Hackbarth (special friend Dustin Williams) and Chad Hackbarth. He is further survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Wesley and Pearl Darmody and Jerry and Marian Darmody, his Rusch cousins, nieces and nephews, neighbors and other relatives and friends. Wally was preceded in death by a daughter, Janine and a son, Dean; his daughter-in-law Shirley Bartelt; his brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Bern Bartelt; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Mildred Darmody; Blanche and Wilmer Hawig; and Hazel and Gene Weinand. His family gives thanks for a life enjoyed, his love of the family farm, his great memory and his strength. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 2:00 pm in Campbellsport United Church of Christ, 228 Forest St. Campbellsport with Rev. Paula Anderson officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am at the church. Burial will be at Union Cemetery at a later date.
