Charles “Chuck” G. Scharschmidt

Charles “Chuck” G. Scharschmidt, 78, of Fond du Lac, passed away on October 17, 2012, surrounded by his loving wife and family.  

 

He was born August 7, 1934, in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Charles and Sophia Gruber Scharschmidt. 

 

He joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and was stationed in Anchorage, AK.  He was then transferred to Army Chemical Center / Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland, where he met and married the joy of his life, Roberta “Bertie” L. Anderson, on April 17, 1958.  They made their home in the Oakfield / Fond du Lac area and shared 54 years of marriage.

 

Chuck was in the construction business in the Oakfield area for many years.  He enjoyed boating, hunting, trap shooting and sturgeon fishing with his wife and family. He had a special talent in wood working and created many unique pieces sold around the world.

 

Together they raised six children: Patty (Bob) Klaetsch, Cindy Hungerford, both of Fond du Lac, Debbie (Bob) Fisher, Donna (Jeff) Redman, Susie (Tim) Shady, and Mike (Sue) Scharschmidt, all of Oakfield.  He leaves behind seventeen grandchildren: Kimberly Klaetsch, Courtney (Nate) Lujan, Britney Klaetsch, Jaime (Geoff) Heider, Katie (Wyn) Steckbauer, Josh (Wendy) Hungerford, Nicole (Chad) Dreher, Joseph (Abbey) Fisher, Amy (Matt) Draves, Jeffrey (Jenelle) Redman, Bobby (Nicole) Redman, Ashley (Grant) Kintzler, Daniel (Danielle) Shady, Mitchell (Kaytlin) Shady, Brett Shady, Stephanie and Michael Scharschmidt; and an additional 14 great-grandchildren and expecting five more in February.  He is also survived by a sister, Delores (Bruce) Kohn of Rhinelander; three brothers-in-law: Claude (Shirley) Vollmer of Juneau,  James (Elva) Anderson of Perryville, MD, and Dick Macdonald of Washington, IL; and an aunt and uncle, Donald and Grace Glenn of Delta, PA.  His two loyal golden retrievers, Jesse and Mattie, are missing him dearly.

 

He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen (Jo) Vollmer; a brother-in-law, Gary Schmick; and a sister-in-law, Jean Macdonald.  

 

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 E. Division Street, Fond du Lac, on Sunday, October 21, 2012, with a private service to follow.
