Daniel Gitzel

Daniel Harvey Gitzel, 85, of Waupun died peacefully Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam surrounded by his family.


Daniel was born October 4, 1930 in the town of Rosendale, the son of Karl and Matilda Gitzel. Growing up he was engaged in farming. On October 20, 1951 he married Barbara Ann Myers. They resided in the Waupun area all their married lives where they raised their six children. Through the years they took in and cared for many foster children. Daniel was employed by National Rivet of Waupun and then retired from John Deere of Horicon after working there 31 ½ years. He was an avid collector  of John Deere toy tractors and memorabilia, and loved gardening and woodworking. Daniel enjoyed visiting family and friends and going on bus trips. Daniel had a very strong faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a prayer warrior, covering the needs of family, friends, and his church. He was an active member of Waupun Assembly of God Church where he was instrumental in its beginnings in 1951. He was a song leader, choir member, and deacon. He loved going to Spencer Lake Bible Camp.


Daniel is survived by six children: Marjorie (Leslie) Zielicke of Fond du Lac, Phyllis Riel of Waupun, Daniel (Linda) Gitzel of Waupun, Barbara (James) Schultz of Waupun, Mark (Paula) Gitzel of Waupun; and Christopher Gitzel of Beaver Dam; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.


Daniel was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Gitzel; parents; siblings: Ralph, Robert and Leon Gitzel, Ida Gillen, Edna Derry, and Vivian Feder; son-in-law: Steve Riel; and great-granddaughter, Serenity Andresen.


Funeral services for Daniel Gitzel will be held Monday, October 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Fellowship in Waupun with Rev. Jeff Casper officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Mound Cemetery in Waupun. Friends and relatives may call on the family on Sunday at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun from 4-7 p.m. and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
