David G. Spoerke, Sr.

David G. Spoerke, Sr., 95, formerly of Fond du Lac and a current resident of Sun Prairie, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 3, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison. He was born in Fond du Lac on April 24, 1926, to George and Adelia (Staffeldt) Spoerke. David graduated from Fond du Lac Goodrich High School. On March 9, 1947, he married Billie M. Harris at First Baptist Church in Fond du Lac.

David was assigned to the 1st Marine Division, serving in the South West Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was awarded a purple heart having been wounded during the battle of Iwo Jima. He was employed for 38 years as a supervisor at Giddings & Lewis (G&L). Dave belonged to the G&L Staff Club, Foreman’s club, Oldsters, and enjoyed playing on the G&L Softball team.

In retirement David & Billie moved to Bella Vista, Ark., where he was a deacon and usher at Judson Baptist Church. In Fond du Lac he served as moderator, deacon, and trustee at First Baptist Church. David enjoyed spending time at his cottage on Pelican Lake, Wis. with his family where he had many great fishing and hunting memories. He always had a project he was working on, from taking apart something to see why it didn’t work to electrical work and other improvements on several of his and Billie’s new homes. David enjoyed bowling and was an avid Packer & Badger fan. He is best remembered by his numerous friends and family for his sense of humor, words of advice, for being a great believer in the commonsense concept, his strong work ethic, and his kind and generous demeanor to everyone he met. He was a truly wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be so missed.

Survivors include his son, David (Betsy) Spoerke, Jr. of Lakewood, Colo.; two daughters, Sally Loy of Sun Prairie and Barbara Jo (Tom) Dolan of Fond du Lac; six grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Douglas Loy; three sisters, Lillian Stotzheim, Caroline Bacus, and Dorothy Flesch.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM, Monday, January 10, 2022, at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 PM. Entombment in Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park in Fond du Lac will follow the service with Military Funeral Honors rendered by the Unites States Marine Corps.
