David T. “Dave” Salm, age 62, of Chilton, died on Friday, April 10, 2020, at his home in Chilton. He was born January 19, 1958, in Chilton, son of Martin Salm and the late Marjorie (Zorn) Salm. Dave married Alexandria Lynn “Alex” Catalano on July 28, 1984 in Milwaukee.

Dave was an entrepreneur at heart, never afraid to take risks and explore what life had to offer. He tried his hand at running an apple orchard, catering paella from a six-foot-wide pan, selling potato pancakes and boiled peanuts at farmers’ markets, and designing a proprietary worchestershire sauce. He especially loved to bring people joy through his food. He discovered his passion for the service industry while working at Marcal’s Restaurant in Chilton and was the director of food service at St. Lawrence Seminary. As his knowledge grew, he applied it to many genres of cooking. He was the Head Pit Master for the Legends of Smoke – Team Red Arrow, and he was the owner and head chef at al corso Restaurant in Collins. He was a member of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association where he served on their board of directors for many years

Dave was a spiritual man, a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Newton.

Dave loved to be in the outdoors. He had a tremendous love for fishing and hunting and took great pride in teaching youth about nature in the Hunter Safety Program. It wasn’t uncommon to see him biking, tending to his garden, or, as a “wanna-be” logger, clearing trees where they need not be for future growth of better trees.

He was a man who believed in hard work, being compassionate toward others who needed it, and remaining honest to all he was. Above all of the joys and blessings bestowed upon Dave in this life, he always put his family first and made sure their needs were of paramount importance in all of his responsibilities. In the short time he had with his granddaughters, he enjoyed watching them grow, and his peek-a-boo sessions will be greatly missed by all.

Survivors include his wife: Alex; his father: Martin; his children: Mitchell (Sara Corsini) Salm, Emily (Marco Ferreri) Salm, Shane Salm & his fiancee Megan Kilsdonk, Madalyn (DJ) Steinberg; 2 grandchildren: Francesca Ferreri & Mila Salm; his siblings: Jane Schwalbach, Pat (LeRoy) Meyers, Nancy (Ken) Mueller, Kathy Joas, Ann (Mark) Rusch, Mark (Jean) Salm, Barb Salm and her life partner, Cathy, Mary Salm, Phillip (Delia) Salm; and his in-laws: Ann Buchach, Joan Backus, Gary (Nancy) Catalano, Gilbert Catalano, Barbara (Steve) Lawent, John Catalano, Victoria (Roland Gonzalez) Catalano, & Christine Catalano. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his mother: Marjorie; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Vincent & Aino Catalano; a brother: Paul Salm; and his siblings-in-law: Richard Buchach, Warren Backus & Rebecca Catalano.

He was Alex’s best and most loyal friend and his children’s hero from beginning to end. As Dave lived his life, remember to love yourself and those around you, find God in all, and to live each day as if it were your last.
