Dr. Mojmir R. Vrtilek

Dr. Mojmir R. Vrtilek, 93, of Fond du Lac died Sunday, May 8, 2016 GranPark Terrace. He was born on August 9, 1922 in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, and studied medicine at Charles University in Prague. Following the Communist takeover of his homeland in 1948, he left the country, living at first in West Germany and later in Switzerland, where he completed his medical studies. He received his medical doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1953 and thereafter continued his training at the University Children’s Hospital in Zurich. He met and married his wife Leonie in Zurich. In 1954 he immigrated to the United States. Dr. Vrtilek finished his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Milwaukee Lutheran Hospital and Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee. In 1958 he moved to Fond du Lac, where he practiced internal medicine, first in association with the Wiley-Smith Clinic and later with the Sharpe Clinic, until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of the St. Agnes Hospital medical staff. From 1958 to 1963 he was also the medical director of the Fond du Lac County Hospital and of Rolling Meadows Nursing Home. He was a member of the Fond du Lac County Medical Society, the Wisconsin State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Internal Medicine. While in the Active Reserve, he attained the rank of Captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army. Dr. Vrtilek was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. 

His parents and his wife preceded him in death. Survivors include his son, Jan Vrtilek, and his wife, Saeqa Vrtilek, and one granddaughter, Julia Vrtilek.

The visitation will be held from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be held in Rienzi Cemetery on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
