Harold F. Breit

Harold F. Breit, a resident of Fond du Lac, died Friday, August 16, 2013, at home, surrounded by his family, following a battle with cancer.

He was born on July 20, 1943, in Fond du Lac, a son of Clarence and Dorothy Schwenn Breit.

On December 18, 1965, he married Kathi M. Steiner in Fond du Lac.

Harold was a member of the Fond du Lac Noon Kiwanis, the Einstein Bushwackers Snowmobile Club, and the Fifield Dirt Devils ATV club.  Harold spent his entire career in the Fond du Lac School District.  Harold taught elementary school at Pier, and middle school Theisen.  After earning an Educational Leadership degree, Harold served as principal at Lincoln Elementary, followed his uncle, Ralph Breit, as principal at Evans Elementary, then moved to Pier Elementary, before completing his educational career with the fun gang at Waters Elementary.

Harold enjoyed every day of 15 years of retirement.  He spent a large part of those years up north at his cabin near Park Falls where he read and talked about hunting and fishing more than he actually did it.  He spent countless hours with family, friends and the “old guys,” and helping out whenever he could.  Harold enjoyed winters in Florida watching the news three times a day, swimming at 3:00 followed by cocktails at 4:00.  Harold loved to laugh, make others laugh, and had a pun for every situation.

Harold is survived by his wife, Kathi, whom he never tried to keep up with; his daughter, Laurie Timm, whose birthday he never forgot with a present wrapped in a Fleet Farm bag; his son, Jeff Breit, and son-in-law, Paul Timm, who provided an endless supply of material for Harold’s jokes and puns; his daughter-in-law, Traci Breit, whom we all knew was a keeper; his grandson, Jason Timm, who kept Grandpa out of trouble, and recently pulled the lawn mower from the pond when Harold got too close; his granddaughter, Anja Timm, who was Grandpa’s cribbage partner; his grandson, Thomas Breit, who seldom said, “Hi Ghoulie” before Grandpa; his granddaughter, Madi Breit, who would listen to Grandpa read story after story;  a sister, Sharon (Robert) Kolterman, who continued the tradition of making diet cookies for Harold,  and an uncle, Ralph Breit, who was a special mentor to Harold.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The visitation will take place on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 E. Division St., Fond du Lac, and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory.  Cremation will follow the traditional service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial funds will be established.  Donations will be made to Agnesian Hospice, education, and the Fifield Dirt Devils ATV Club.

A special thanks to Mary Ann and John Steffes for their support during Harold’s illness, as well as other family and friends who helped keep Harold’s spirits lifted.
