Jane L. Martens

Jane Lloyd Martens, 90, of Waupun, Wisconsin, formerly of Washington, Michigan, passed away June 1, 2018 at the Waupun Christian Home and Rehabilitation Center of heart failure.

Jane was born March 3, 1928 in Spirit Lake, IA to Myrtle and Emrys Lloyd, the second of two daughters. In her youth, summers were spent on the water at Spirit Lake with her sister and cousins and she often mentioned how much she enjoyed those times. She graduated salutatorian from Fort Dodge High School and continued her education at Iowa State College in Ames, attaining a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. While at ISC, she met her future husband in the violin section of the orchestra.  She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and made many lifelong friends from that association. After graduating, she taught high school math for one year in Earlham, Iowa before marrying David Martens in June of 1951 and moving to Michigan. She and David built their dream home in Washington, Michigan north of Detroit and lived there for 56 years. She had three children and stayed home until the youngest was in high school and then became a tax preparer for H&R Block, Beneficial Finance and then independently. She volunteered for the First Congregational Church of Rochester for many years and taught math to the neighborhood kids during the summer months. She enjoyed music, her dogs and playing bridge. She and David traveled frequently in their later years, seeing 49 of the 50 states (they never made it to Hawaii), but her favorite trip was a visit to Wales, country of her Lloyd ancestry. She was a very dedicated mother, an incredible wife and a loving grandmother.

Jane is survived by her husband of 66 years, David, and her three children: Dr. Alan (Dr. Beverly) Martens of Waupun, WI, Dr. Ruth Bethune of Fairbanks, AK, and Nancy (Darryl) Cernusak of Boise, ID.  She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Dr Erin (Richard) Dawson, Leah (Jeff) Rhodes, David Martens, Andrea Courtright, Ryan Courtright, Madison Bethune; and 2 great-grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time.
