Jerome M. VanVeghel

Jerome M. VanVeghel, 98, of St. Germain, Wi, passed away on November 29, 2021. He was born on February 20, 1923 to George and Stephanie (Kowalski) VanVeghel.

Jerry served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 to 1945. He was on Omaha Beach the second day of the Normandy invasion, marched through Paris during the liberation of France, and was in the Battle of the Bulge.

On July 13, 1946 he married Dorothy K. Lajsic at St. Augustine Catholic Church, West Allis. She preceded him in death in 2011.

Jerry was a devout Christian and prayed every day. He used the strength in his faith to get through his many aches and pains. Jerry was always there to give a helping hand and he thought of others first. He was able to travel to Washington DC on the Honor Flight. His dog, Sadie, was his constant companion.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen Chicka and John Schultz of St. Germain, two grandsons, Nicholas (Karyn) Chicka of St. Germain, and Michael (Margaret) Chicka of Wausau, WI; five great-granddaughters, Ellie and Anna Chicka and Stevie, Ruby, and Caroline Chicka; two great-grandsons, Tristan and Travis Chicka; brother, William (Sherry) VanVeghel; sisters-in-law, MaryAnn (Pete) LaBahn, Joan Lajsic, and Joanne (Brad) Fluyeras; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; son-in-law, Steven Chicka; an infant daughter, Barbara; brothers, Fred, Donald, George, and Jack “Snipe”; brothers-in-law, George Lajsic and Dan Lajsic; and sisters-in-law, Gladys and Betty.

Services: Visitation for Jerome will be held on Monday, December 6, 2021 at Sacred Heart Church, Holy Family Parish, 200 South Peters Avenue, Fond du Lac, at 11:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation at 12:00. A private graveside service will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jerry’s name may be offered to Holy Family Catholic Church or the American Legion Post 75, in Fond du Lac.
