John L. Steffes

John “Steff, J.L.” Louis Steffes, 73, passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2022 at Milwaukee VA Hospital after a brief illness. He was born March 15, 1949 in Fond du Lac to Louis and Vincentia (Brenner) Steffes.

John graduated from Goodrich High School. He honorably served in the Vietnam War. John married Nancy Tweedale on February 16, 1990 in Fond du Lac.

John was employed at Tecumseh Products and then at Georgia Pacific Paper Company for 14 years until his retirement. After retirement, John and Nancy spent their winters in Arizona.

John could fix or building anything, and if he didn’t know how, he taught himself how. He made beautiful stained-glass lamps. John loved hunting and fishing, with Nancy as his #1 fishing partner.  He loved frying the fish he caught during family fish fries.

John enjoyed playing poker with his friends and loved his cats, Lilly and Abby.

John’s family thanks the VA, the Milwaukee VA Medical Center and the Fisher House, a facility that lessens the burden on families whose loved one is staying at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center by providing accommodations with no cost to them.

John is survived by his wife Nancy; son Eric (Crystal) Steffes; siblings Mary (Giovanni) Cappellari, Sr. Jean Steffes, CSA, and Carol (Thomas) Freund and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents.
