Marcia Hletko

On April 26, 2021, Marcia Hletko joined her beloved husband Bernie.  She was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on August 29, 1936, to Lucy and Ernest Mertens.  She attended St. Mary’s Springs Academy and then Marian University where she studied medical technology.  She worked as a medical technologist at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac and at Eagle River Memorial Hospital.  She married Bernie Hletko on October 2, 1965.  The Everett Colony became their home.  Three children followed – Anne, Bernie, and John.  The Hletko’s entertained many families and friends at the Everett Resort on Catfish Lake.  Marcia was ever-present in the resort kitchen.  Friends became family at the resort.   Winters were filled with hockey and figure skating at the dome.  Marcia was a fixture in the hockey and figure skating community.

Being outdoors and surrounded by plants and flowers were dear to her. The garden, flower beds, and plant stands overflowed.  She was a voracious reader and was never without a book.  We believe she single-handedly kept the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Chicago Tribune in print.  The Vilas County News Review was always on the coffee table. Following her husband Bernie’s death, she traveled the world with her sisters and sister-in-law – Australia, Germany and the Czech Republic were among the highlights. When grandchildren Cooper, Ethan, Grace, and Marcus arrived, she enjoyed nothing more than reading to them, sitting outside on the cottage lawn watching them play in the water.

She is survived by her children: Anne (David Lawton), Bernie (Julie) and John; grandchildren Cooper, Ethan, Grace, and Marcus; sister, Geraldine (Bill) Nimmer, brothers, Alex (Pearl) Mertens and Dennis Mertens; aunt, Genevieve Abler; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie; her parents, Lucy and Ernest Mertens; and sister, Camilla.
