Maxine R. Johnson

Maxine R. (Hostettler) Johnson, age 93, of Chilton, died on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Willowdale Health & Rehab in New Holstein. She was born March 16, 1925 in Hollister, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Arthur & Blanche (Pratt) Roberts.  Maxine married Calvin Hostettler in 1950 in Chicago, Illinois; he preceded her in death in October of 1990.  She later married Michael Johnson in 1996 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

Throughout her life, Maxine fully enjoyed cooking and baking and applied these tremendous skills operating restaurants in Crandon and Central Wisconsin.  It was often joked about through the family that Maxine & Cal operated enough restaurants through her life that she could be considered a ‘Chain Restaurateur’.

Above all of the gifts in her life, Maxine truly treasured the gift of salvation through her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It was this gift, freely given, that prompted her to show that grace to others.  She loved children and gave so much of herself to every child who ever came into her life.  She opened her door to anyone who needed it and made sure that every child she fostered could read before they ever set foot into a classroom.

With her God given gifts of compassion, patience and food preparation, Maxine also worked for the Berger Place in Fond du Lac where she was one of the group home’s caregivers and the resident’s favorite chef.  There wasn’t a moment of Maxine’s life that didn’t reflect the love of God in her life toward every person she came across.  If there is a lesson everyone who knew Maxine could apply to their own life, it is to ‘Love their neighbor as themselves.’  Maxine lived this every day, helping and changing lives as she lived every day in service to her Lord, and the people he placed in her life.

Survivors include her husband: Mike; her children: Linda (Gary) Bodinger, Michael (Susan) Hostettler, Patricia (Julius) Roe, Sue (Gregory) Schenkus, Thomas (Wendy) Hostettler, Bill (Darlene) Hostettler, John (Suzanne) Hostettler, James (Amy) Hostettler; her step-sons: Michael Johnson & Tim Johnson; grandchildren: Sheila (Mark) McClone, Amy (Don) Keppers, John (Kelly) Bodinger, Michelle (Craig) Piepenburg, Jeremy (Aimee) Hostettler, Ellen (Joseph) Petrie, Laura (John) Behnke, David (Angel) Rief, Andy Rief, JoBeth (David) Schuler, Joshua (Holly) Schenkus, Michael (Marie) Hostettler, Steven (Natasha) Hostettler, Sarah Hostettler, Jackie (Richard) Batzler, Jessica Hostettler, Jacob (Kelsey) Hostettler, Jolene Hostettler, Kyle (Whitney) Hostettler, & Amber Hostettler; 26 great grandchildren;  4 great-geat grandchildren; a brother: Roger Roberts; a sister-in-law: Lois Hostettler; a profusion of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Calvin; and her 12 siblings.

Funeral service will be at 3:30 pm on Friday, October 19, 2018 at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton. Burial will follow in the Hillside Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm on Friday, October 19, 2018.

Maxine’s family would like to thank the entire staff of Willowdale for the loving care and compassion that they provided to Maxine and her entire family over the course of the past year.
