Merle Navis

Merle Navis, 92, of Waupun, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019 at The Christian Homestead in Waupun.


Merle was born July 26, 1926 near Brandon, WI the son of John and Genevieve Greenfield Navis.  On August 27, 1948 he married Evelyn Vant Hoff in the town of Alto. Following their marriage the couple farmed in the town of Alto most of their married lives. Merle’s
passion was his family and farming.  His social life revolved around playing cards with family and friends. Merle was heavily involved with 4-H as a leader, the Alto Fair, and the Farm Bureau. He was a member of Alto Reformed Church and served as elder and
deacon.  He sang in the men’s chorus, church choir, and sang solos and duets with his son, Mark, accompanied by Evelyn. He took great joy in being around his children and grandchildren. Merle was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II.


Merle is survived by four children: Sandy (Richard) Whisler of Lake Mills, David Navis of Muncie, IN, Mark (Lana) Navis of Waupun, and Shelly (Bob) Andrews of Farmington, MO; 12 grandchildren: Tyler Vande Zande, Laura (Richard) Beddingfield, Amanda (Jeff) Cihak, Michael (Tiffany) Navis, Heidi (Seth) Braker, Alyssa (Ben) Homan, Ben and Andy Navis, and Bobby, Katherine, Jake, and Kaylin Andrews; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ardell (Art) Nicolas of Hartford.


Merle was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; a son-in-law, Gary C. Vande Zande; brothers: Glenn Navis and Howard Navis; and a sister, Pat Redeker.


Funeral services for Merle Navis will be held Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Alto Reformed Church with Rev. Kevin Van Wyk and Rev. Doug Shotsky officiating. Burial will follow at Alto Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call on the family on Friday at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun from 4-7 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. American Legion Post 210 of Waupun will provide military honors.
