Merwin C. Sampson

Merwin C. Sampson, 90, of North Fond du Lac, died Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home, with family at his side.

He was born on February 1, 1923, in the Town of Byron, a son of Amos E. and Vida S. Cowles Sampson. 

Merwin was a 1941 graduate of Mayville High School and attended an Agriculture Farm Short Course at UW-Madison.  He served with the United States Marine Corps from June 1942 until July 1944.

On December 25, 1945, he married Bernice M. Kopf at Immanuel-Trinity Lutheran Church,

Fond du Lac, with the Rev. John H. Becker officiating.

 

Merwin and Bernice worked together as a team, taking great pride in their dairy farming operation, even having the top producing cow in the county several times.  Following his retirement from farming, Merwin enjoyed driving school bus for the Rosendale Brandon School District, both to school and for their athletic events.

Merwin was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Rosendale, the Marine Corps League of Fond du Lac, the Rosendale VFW Post 10195, and the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice; a son, Bruce Merwin Sampson; a sister, Vida Kiersten; a brother-in-law, Robert Kopf; five nieces:  Jean (Roger) Schmidt, Bonnie (Ed) Gruen, Carol (Barnard) Oppermann, Gail (Phill) Majerus, and Linda (Dave) Vollmer; and four nephews:  John (Cheryl) Summers, Gary (Joan) Sampson, Gerald (Elizabeth) Mingus, and Stanley (Cathy) Mingus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Wanda Fay Sampson; a brother, Clifford (Avis) Sampson; a sister, Elta (Robert) Mingus; a brother-in-law, Anton “Tony” Kiersten, a sister-in-law, Loraine Kopf; and a nephew, Neil Summers.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Peace Lutheran Church, 124 South Main Street, Rosendale, with Rev. Clay R. Salmela officiating.  Burial with military rites will follow in Rosendale Cemetery.

The visitation will be on Thursday at church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
