Mrs. Birgitta Johnson Campbell

Mrs. Birgitta
Johnson Campbell, 92, passed peacefully on February 23, 2014 at Grancare
Nursing home in Fond du Lac. She had resided there for the previous year. She
was attended by hospice for the past 2 months.

She was born
in Iceland to John Johnson and Hekla Johnson, and immigrated to the USA at the
age of 21 to join her father, who had come earlier. She became a naturalized
citizen and married her husband William A Campbell in May of 1959 in Cleveland
Heights, OH.

A little
known fact is that she was a driving force in Wisconsin for introducing a far
more benign medicine (Clozaril) for the treatment of Bi-Polar disorder and
schizophrenia than was currently in use at the time. Clozaril had just been
approved for use in the US, although it had been used successfully in Europe
(including Iceland) some several years, which she discovered on a visit there
to Sigmunder Gudbjornason, who later became president of the University of
Iceland. She intensively and ultimately successfully lobbied to have trials
introduced into Wisconsin.

A woman who
always gave freely of her time and energy, she cared for elderly relatives for
years and always with a smile and a kind word for everyone.

She is
survived by her husband, William A Campbell of Fond du Lac; two daughters: Kristen
A Campbell of Ferndale MI and Carol G Campbell of Fond du Lac; son, LTC William
R (Naree) Campbell currently stationed at Schofield Barracks HI; grandson, Daniel
N Richard and granddaughter, Holly A Richard of West Memphis, AR, and 4 great
grandchildren.

She was
preceded in death by her parents, both sisters and her brother.

There is
currently no funeral or memorial service planned, one will be held at a future
family gathering.

We would
like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the professional and caring staff of
the Grancare Nursing home, especially Jaimie, Annie, Linda, Hanah, and Sarah.
