Muriel G. Sullivan

Muriel Germaine Sullivan (Weeks), age 98, died Saturday, April 9, 2022, in Hagerstown, Maryland after a brief illness. Until her illness, she was living independently at Homewood in Williamsport, Maryland. 

Muriel was born in Chilton, Wisconsin in 1923. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She started her career as an educator, then worked in journalism and later in public relations.

In 1949, Muriel married James Sullivan, her beloved husband of 49 years. The couple lived in Madison, Wisconsin, before moving to Falls Church, Virginia in 1961. James worked at the Department of Agriculture for both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and later worked for the national AARP organization until his retirement. Muriel worked in public relations for the American Red Cross chapter in Arlington, Virginia. 

In 1987, after James’s retirement, the couple moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. In 2014, Muriel moved to Homewood in Williamsport, Maryland, where she enjoyed various activities, including bridge and social events with family and friends. She was known for her friendliness, sparkling personality and quick wit. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, who visited her regularly in Williamsport. She remained sharp, lively and intellectually curious her entire life.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Sullivan; her parents, James Weeks and Katherine Weeks, of Chilton, Wisconsin; her older sister, Carol Jean Weeks, of Chilton, Wisconsin; her younger sister, Viann Reinl of Kiel, Wisconsin; an adult daughter, Kathleen Sullivan, of Staunton, Virginia, who died in 2020; and an infant daughter, Maureen Sullivan, of Madison, Wisconsin. Survivors include her son, Larry (Patricia) Sullivan, of Ontario, Oregon; her daughter, Patricia Vaughn, of Staunton, Virginia; her daughter, Mary Margaret (Mark) Malin of Charles Town, West Virginia; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. 

The family will have a memorial service and Mass for Muriel and her daughter, Kathleen, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Chilton, Wisconsin, on July 22, 2022, at 11 am, followed by a graveside service at St. Augustine Cemetery at noon. The family requests donations be made to the American Red Cross in lieu of flowers.
