Peter Martin

Peter Martin, age 71, died peacefully on Thursday, December 23, 2021 with his wife Mary and children at his side showering him with love.  He was born on June 23, 1950 in Beaver Dam, WI to Dorothy and Donald Martin, Sr.  He graduated from Waupun High School in 1968, from UW-Oshkosh in 1978 with a bachelor of science degree in English, and from UW-Milwaukee in 2001 with a master’s degree in English.  He and Mary were married on September 5, 1980.  He spent 27 years working for the State of Wisconsin, Department of Corrections, and retired as a Probation and Parole Agent in 2003.  He went on to teach English for 10 years beginning at Marian University and finishing at UW-Oshkosh.

In his early twenties, he spent six months touring Europe staying in youth hostels.  He was a Golden Gloves boxer and trainer. He was an avid reader, a gifted writer and poet, history buff, hunter, gardener, hobby farmer and craftsman.  He was a runner and completed many races including half-marathons. He adored his grandchildren and enjoyed hosting family get-togethers and had a talent to make people laugh.

     Peter is survived by his wife, Mary; three children, Jessica (Jason) Riley, Jacob (Erin) Martin, and Madeline (AbdurRahim Ahmad) Martin; six grandchildren, Corbeau Caldwell (14), Corinne Caldwell (11), Parker Sung (9), Saadiq Ahmad (5), Macsen Martin (3), and Maeve Martin (4 months); brothers, Terry (Barb) Martin, Don (Dort DeWild) Martin; sisters, Julia Martin, Laurie (Mike) Schafer, and Dottie Martin; brother-in-law, Michael (Debbie) White; sisters-in-law, Barbara White, Louise (Mike) Roach, Annette (Tom) Gryglewski, and Cate (Mark) Pearce; and many nieces, nephews and friends.  

     He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Donald Martin, Sr.; father-in-law, Cecil White, mother-in-law, Joan White; sisters, Nancy Rens and Lynda Koehler; and brother-in-law, Jerry Rens.

Cremation has taken place. Peter’s family invites friends and family to a time of visitation on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 3:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M at Zacherl Funeral Home. A celebration of life will follow the visitation. Go to www.zacherlfuneralhome.com to send condolences.

 In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Peter’s name to the Katharine Drexel Homeless Shelter, Fond du Lac.  

     The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to St. Agnes Hospital staff and in particular to RNs Hannah and Jessica, Dr. Mogalai and Dr. Singh for their kind care and compassion.
