Rev. Stanley C. F. Hayes

Rev. Stanley C. F. Hayes, 92, of Byron, died Monday, May 6, 2013, at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac.

 

He was born on April 4, 1921, in the town of Ashford, Fond du Lac County, a son of Carl Quimby and Elsie Pauline (Draeger) Hayes, and grew up on the family dairy farm on County K near Lomira.

 

Mr. Hayes is a 1938 graduate of Goodrich HS in Fond du Lac. He graduated from North Central College in 1949, and Evangelical Theological Seminary, both in Naperville, Illinois, in 1952.

 

On June 20, 1944, he married Vallanee Rose Luedtke at Ebenezer Evangelical Church, Elwood Corners, Town of Lomira.

 

Mr. Hayes was ordained as an elder in the Wisconsin Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church (EUB) in 1952.  He served EUB and United Methodist churches in Greenville, Richland Center, Marshfield, Ripon, Kingston/Dalton, Brandon, Beaver Dam, Eden, and Campbellsport. His last pastoral service was at Covenant UMC in Fond du Lac where he served as visitation pastor and pastor emeritus. Mr. Hayes also served with social service agencies, including Workshops, Inc, of Fond du Lac.

 

Mr. Hayes loved to read. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, especially on visits to their children. He played violin and viola in local ensembles, sang in the Elks Men’s Choir in Fond du Lac and with The Trust Company, the Wisconsin Conference UMC quartet. He was an active member of Lions Clubs and his bowling league for many years. He loved to read and loved jokes, especially puns. Stan was known since childhood for his mop of hair – his great-grandchildren are still said to have “Stanley” hair. His usual ritual was to end the evening with a bowl of ice cream topped with Hershey’s syrup.

 

He is survived by seven children:  Carla (Neil) Olson of Milton, Wisconsin, Wanda Hayes (Edwin) Eichler of Pigeon, Michigan, Timothy (Nancy McEldowney) Hayes of Arlington, Virginia, Penelope Hayes Strong of Billings, Montana, Mary Beth Hayes (Patrick Mullen) of Fond du Lac, Heidi Hayes (Richard Johnson) of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and Martha (James) Burkhead of Memphis, Tennessee; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth, and her husband, Ken Kortemeier of Rockford, Illinois; and one sister-in-law, Nieta Kindschuh Hayes of Johnstown, Colorado.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Val, on January 21, 2007; a brother, Marvin Hayes, Town of Ashford; a sister, Evelyn Sterman of Hartford; and a nephew, Howard Hayes, Town of Ashford.

 

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Covenant United Methodist Church, 20 North Marr Street, Fond du Lac, with Rev. Michael Morning officiating. A sunset burial, with Rev. Kerry Wilson officiating, will follow at 7:30 p.m. at Ebenezer Cemetery, Town of Lomira.

 

The visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 E. Division Street, Fond du Lac, and on Saturday at church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
