Royal J. Carey

Royal J. Carey, 90, of Campbellsport ended his journey on earth and entered eternal life on September 20, 2017 at the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac. He was born on February 26, 1927 in the Town of Osceola to James Carey and Caroline (nee Ludwig) Carey Tuttle. On August 22, 1953, he married the love of his life Carol Cosgrove at St. Patrick’s Church in Fond du Lac. In August, they celebrated 64 wonderful years of marriage. 



He grew up on the family farm in the Town of Eden. After graduating from Campbellsport High School he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In November of 2012 he had the privilege of participating in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. 



Royal was employed in the fuel and oil industry for 42 years in management and sales. He worked at Mobil Oil Corporation from 1953-1970 and for Condon Oil Company from 1970-1995. 



He enjoyed playing and managing baseball in the Kettle Moraine and Rock River Leagues. As time went on, he managed and played softball, and also managed Little League teams in Fond du Lac. He enjoyed playing basketball in the East Shore League. He was an avid sheepshead and cribbage player. 



Royal’s passion was trees. He enjoyed planting, caring for, and maintaining them. Having planted more than 1.5 million trees since 1968, he said that “It was a hobby that got away.” He was a Charter member of the Fond du Lac Agri-business Council, Friends of Kettle Moraine, Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association and the Winnebago Woodland Owners Chapter. He was a lifetime member of the American Forestry Association. He was a member of the Fond du Lac Knights of Columbus, the Oakfield Lions Club, and the Fond du Lac American Legion Post #75. 



He is survived by his wife Carol, his sons Kevin of Wausau, Timon (Susan) of Sheboygan; siblings Marvin (Maryann) Tuttle of Eden, Dale (Shirley) Tuttle of West Bend, and Jan (Ken) Schuman of Sun Prairie; sister-in-law Joan Hau of Fond du Lac. He is further survived by his grandchildren Allan (Jessica) Carey of Arlington, VA, Michael Carey of San Francisco, CA, Dawn (Jason) Bertram of Campbellsport, Josh Carey (Andrea Santiago) of N. Fond du Lac, Jeana Carey (Andrew Minert) of N. Fond du Lac, Kassandra Carey of N. Fond du Lac, 7 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents James Carey and Caroline Tuttle, his brother Gordon, an infant sister Iris, sister-in-law Alice Cosgrove and brother-in-law Joe Hau; and special aunt and uncle Rose and Leo Sammans. 



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September 25th at 6:00 PM at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 406 E. Main Street, Campbellsport. 



Rev. Mark Jones will officiate and inurnment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery. 



Visitation will be Monday, September 25th from 3:00PM until time of Mass at the Church.
