Oh Deer

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Fabry showed compassion in helping out the smallest victim of a car deer crash on Highway 49 north of Waupun Thursday. He found a fawn lying next to her mother who had been killed by the impact of the crash. The impact of the crash speeded up the delivery of the baby deer, but it was not injured. Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says after consulting with a Sheriff’s sergeant the deputy put the fawn in his squad car and took it to a certified wildlife specialist near Slinger. He says the fawn road shotgun, no pun intended down to the rehabilitation center. Waldschmidt says Judy Stephenson specializes in helping wildlife recover. He says she takes in wild animals that are wounded gets them healthy again and when they are healthy enough to release she releases them back into the wild. Since the accident happened in the area of Highway 49 and Whoolie Road they dubbed the little survivor Hoolie too, but with a different spelling. He says they got some hopeful news Friday morning learning that Hoolie was drinking and its other bodily functions seemed to be normal.  (Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s photos)
