Oil Slick Found In FDL River

Fond du Lac firefighters responded to a report Monday morning of an oil slick on the Fond du Lac River in the 500 block of Water Street. Division Chief Troy Haase says it wasn’t really a hazard, but more of an environmental issue. He says the size of the slick depended on the current and location. He says at some points it was a 10 to 15 foot sheen, but at others it was down to 1 ½ to 2 feet wide. Orange booms were put out to stop the oil slick and collect it. He says they did the best they could to clean out the river and contain as much as possible. Haase says they are also trying to determine the source of the leak. He says it may have been the result of storm water run-off from recent heavy rains. The floating booming, which is located just south of the Lakeside west boat launch will remain in the river for the next couple of days to collect any residual oil.
