One On One Program Works For Dodge County

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has had success over the years by assigning squad cars to deputies that they can take home after their shift. It is called the one-on-one program. Sheriff Dale Schmidt feels it acts as a crime deterrent in the neighborhoods where the deputies live. It also saves time if deputies have to be called in for a major incident because they don’t have to drive to Juneau to pick up a car.  Schmidt also believes it benefits the department on car maintenance costs. He says the deputies take good care of the car because they have to drive it for at least 5 years or 150,000 miles. Schmidt says if they had a fleet system they would be replacing squad cars much more frequently. Deputies patrol about 900 square miles in the county.
