Parties At Odds Over Drop Boxes In WI

With the Wisconsin Supreme Court expected to rule soon on whether ballot drop boxes are allowed under state law, Chippewa Valley lawmakers rallied in support of them this week.

Democratic state Senator Jeff Smith said, “They’re safe, they’re secure, they work, because, by the way, every ballot has to be matched up with a voter.”

Republican state Senator State Kathy Bernier of Chippewa Falls sponsored a bill that would have allowed drop boxes. It passed without support from Democrats, who said it was too limited.

“They voted against all of it and then now are complaining about it. Well, that’s, in my mind, nonsensical.”

Governor Tony Evers ended up vetoing the bill. The state Supreme Court ruling is expected in June.
