Phishing Scam Affects Mercury Employees

Employees at Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac are among the Brunswick Corporation employees in the U.S. impacted by an email phishing incident. The company last Friday discovered the incident potentially disclosed 2015 W-2 information of current and former employees. Mercury spokesman Lee Gordon says the focus now is on protecting employees from possible identity theft. Brunswick is offering credit monitoring and reporting, identity theft assistance services and identity theft insurance free to every affected employee for up to two years. Gordon says Brunswick understands what happened and people will react to it differently. Gordon says this was a criminal scam and not a rogue hacker trying to gain access to Brunswick’s information systems. He says someone received an email, responded to it and that allowed the documents to be released. Brunswick has about 13,000 employees in the U.S.
