Pig Ear Dog Treats Recalled over Salmonella Concerns

Pig ears sold as dog treats in 33 states, including
Wisconsin are being recalled due to an outbreak of salmonella. Pet Supplies
Plus is recalling the bulk pig ears that are sold in open bins at more than 400
stores across the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating the contaminated
pig ears, with evidence showing that human contact with the dog treats is the
likely source of a salmonella outbreak that has led to 45 people getting sick –
including 12 hospitalizations – in 13 states. None of those 45 cases are
confirmed to have resulted from purchasing pig ears from Pet Supplies Plus.
Pets can also be affected by the contaminated products, and may be lethargic
and have diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Anyone who may have purchased the bulk pig
ears should throw them away.
