Prosecutions Increasing In Drug Deaths

With the increase in heroin deaths district attorneys’ offices are finding themselves prosecuting more 1st degree reckless homicide cases. Dodge County District Attorney Kurt Klomberg says they are difficult cases for both law enforcement agencies that investigate overdose deaths and prosecutors. His office has only prosecuted one in three years. Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney says last year his office filed about 10 cases. He says in some cases they charged multiple individuals in the same death. Klomberg says the families of the victims want someone to take responsibility for their deaths. He says the victim may have had a drug addiction, but they didn’t deserve to die and someone has to be held accountable for that.
