Report Shows Over $1 Billion in Unpaid Medical Bills

A report from the Wisconsin Hospital Association shows hospitals around the state have seen an increase in unpaid medical bills that has now topped a billion dollars. 150 Wisconsin hospitals had a total of $1.1 billion in uncompensated health care services in 2017, which is up 14 percent from 2016. That includes charity care and bad debt. The report does not explain the increase – but a nonprofit law firm says the Affordable Care Act helped reduce uncompensated care.
