Retlaw And Scott Street Shell Liquor Licenses Approved But…

The Fond du Lac City Council approved 14 liquor license renewals last night then took up the licenses for the Retlaw Hotel and Scott Street Shell separately. Owners of the hotel paid off the back taxes and fees they’ve owed the City for more than two years Tuesday while the liquor license holder for Scott Street Shell is a different LLC then the owner of the convenience store, which also owes taxes. The Council is looking at tightening up its alcohol license ordinance to address situations where a license holder isn’t living up to its financial obligations. Councilman Rob Vande Zande wants to see a time limit for that. The Retlaw’s liquor license was approved on a 6 to nothing vote, but the Scott Street Shell was approved on a 3 to 1 vote with Council President Sam Meyer and Councilman Dan Manning abstaining from the vote. Councilman Gary Miller voted against it saying the convenience store was using a loophole to get away with not paying taxes it owes. Meyer says he abstained because he also felt it wasn’t right, but couldn’t vote against the Shell station because they didn’t have a hearing before the Alcohol Licensing Committee.
