Scam Uses Sheriff’s Sergeant Title To Leverage Payment

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials are cautioning residents about a phone scam in which the caller pretends to be a sergeant from their department. The caller identifies themselves as a Sheriff’s sergeant and advises the person that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The caller then says the warrant can be quashed if the person they are calling uses a pre-paid credit or debit cart to pay for bond. A similar scam popped up in Dodge County in September. Callers posed as Sheriff’s deputies and told the person they were calling a warrant had been issued for their arrest because they’d missed jury duty. A similar method of payment was instructed for quashing the warrant.
