Scammers Pretending to be Washington County Deputies

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a number of suspicious phone calls made to citizens around the area where the caller claimed to be a member of the agency. The scammers are using actual names of deputies at the Sheriff’s Office – telling people there is an open civil case against them or an active warrant for their arrest. In at least one case, a citizen was told to purchase gift cards. A number provided seems to change consistently but does go to a voicemail claiming to be the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies do not typically call people to inform them of a warrant – nor would they solicit payment over the phone, especially through gift cards. Anyone receiving a call should hang up, find the actual number for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and call for an officer or shift supervisor.
