Schraa Wheel Tax Bill Likely To Be Replaced By A Similar Bill

State Representative Michael Schraa has introduced a bill that would make municipalities and counties hold a referendum for voter approval before implementing a wheel tax. Five counties and 15 municipalities across the state already have wheel taxes.  He says that is in addition to the $75 you already pay the state to register your car. He says his bill has some backing, but a Milwaukee legislator is putting together a tax and transportation package that includes a bill about a wheel tax. He believes his own bill will fall by the wayside. He says the other bill is very similar to his. Schraa says the additional fees can add up. He says for instance in Milwaukee in addition to the state car registration fee, motorists are paying a $20 wheel tax to the city and $30 more to the county.
